Taiwan Egg Price Rises Again, Students’ Nutritious Lunch Turns Into Scrambled Eggs

According to Taiwan media reports, the price of eggs in the island has been rising. Chen Mingxin, president of the Taiwan Dining Box Trade Association, said on the 14th that eggs are a favorite food for students. It is impossible for students to eat eggs. Egg cooking will still be arranged every month. But he also said frankly that the soaring price of eggs has almost eliminated the whole egg cooking. Changing to mix scrambled eggs with vegetables in the season can reduce the consumption of eggs by 25%.
The price of eggs remains high, and the price of pickled eggs in snack bars has also risen. One egg costs 15 yuan (NT $, the same below). The whole egg meal for nutritious lunch makes the group meal industry cry out that it is too much to eat. Chen Mingxin pointed out that if you eat with salted eggs, the cost of each meal will be 12 yuan. The average of a nutritious lunch in Taiwan is 40 to 65 yuan. The profit of the group meal business is less than 10%. In the face of the high price of eggs, you have to adjust the cooking method to respond.

Taiwan’s egg price rise has traces to follow. In October, the feed price in the island was finally expected to decrease by 0.4 yuan per kilogram, but it was a flash in the pan. In November, the feed price returned to the rising trend.
A number of large feed manufacturers in the island issued a “price rise order”. Since November 1, they have successively raised the price of feed by 0.5 yuan per kilogram, which is equivalent to the return of all the price reductions in October. Due to the rising cost again, the chicken farmers complained bitterly that they would raise the price of eggs.

At the beginning of this year, there was a “chicken shortage” in the island. In addition to the soaring cost of feed, the price of eggs in the island rose for three consecutive times. The price of eggs at the place of origin rose from 36.5 yuan per kilogram in March (600 grams per kilogram) to 42.5 yuan in July, a new high in recent years.
Wang Jianpei, secretary-general of the Taiwan Chicken Breeding Association, said earlier that, from the perspective of cost, now the feed has been raised again, and from the perspective of the supply and demand market mechanism, the overall amount of the island’s egg market is now “slightly lacking”, especially in winter, when eating hot pot, eggs are a must, regardless of cost or supply and demand, egg prices have the conditions to rise.
According to the statistics released by the “General Accounting Office” of the Taiwan authorities on November 8, Taiwan’s CPI in October rose by 2.72% year on year, slightly less than the 2.76% in September, and the core CPI after deducting vegetables, fruits and energy rose by 2.96% year on year; The CPI of important people’s livelihood materials rose by 7%, and the trend is still expanding, with egg rising 39.99%, the most significant.
According to the changes in seven categories of CPI in October, the food category still had the highest increase, reaching 5.17%. According to the “General Accounting Office”, the main reason is that the price of eggs and meat is affected by the increase of feeding costs, and the price of aquatic products, food for eating, conditioning food, vegetables and dairy products also continues to rise.
In addition, the regular salary of employees in Taiwan in the first nine months of this year was 44000 yuan, an increase of 2.99% over the same period last year. However, the price rose by 3.07% over the same period. After deducting the price factor, the actual recurring salary of employees decreased compared with the same period of previous years. This shows that since this year, local people have been under great price pressure, and their purchasing power is also declining.
